Filipino Survival Phrases Lesson 27 - Looking around locally in the Philippines.
In today's lesson, we'll introduce to you a phrase that will help you track down the specific something that you're looking for.
Today's phrase is "Where can I get/buy (something)?" First, we need something. So, let's use the word Tubig, which means "water."
Let's break it down by syllable: Tubig.
Now, let's hear it once again: Tubig.
In Filipino, "Where can I buy water?" is Saan ako makakabili ng tubig?
Saan ako makakabili ng tubig?
Let's break it down by syllable: Saan ako makakabili ng tubig?
Now, let's hear it once again: Saan ako makakabili ng tubig?
The first word Saan means "where."
Let's break down this word and hear it one more time: Saan.
Saan.
And, Saan.
Followed by Ako which means "I" or "me."
Let's break down this word and hear it one more time: Ako.
And, Ako.
This is followed by the word Makakabili, which in English is "to buy" or "to purchase."
Makakabili.
Makakabili.
And, Makakabili.
Then comes Ng, which has no English translation.
It is followed by Tubig, which in English is "water."
Let's break down this word and hear it one more time: Tubig.
Tubig.
And, Tubig.
So, to recap here, we have Saan ako makakabili ng tubig? which means "Where can I buy water?"
Saan ako makakabili ng tubig?
Now, to ask for a different item, we can just replace the word for "water" with any other word and the phrase works just fine. Let's try "paper." In Filipino, Papel.
Let's break down this word and hear it one more time: Papel.
And, Papel.
In Filipino, "Where can I buy paper?" is Saan ako makakabili ng papel?
One more time slowly: Saan ako makakabili ng papel?
And, Saan ako makakabili ng papel?
This phrase will come in handy before leaving the hotel, talking with taxi drivers, or other people trying help you locate a desired item. Now that you're able to ask, you're going to get an answer. So, as we are running out of time, we're going to have to cover that in the next lesson.
In instances where you want to ask "Where can I get water?" you can also say, Saan ako makakakuha ng tubig? Notice that we replaced the word for "buy" with the word for "get," which is Makakakuha.
Let's break down this word and hear it one more time: Makakakuha.
And, Makakakuha.
To recap everything, let's break down the phrase and hear it one more time: Saan ako makakakuha ng tubig?
And, Saan ako makakakuha ng tubig?
