Hi, everybody! In this lesson, you'll learn some important phrases for Christmas in the Philippines and some valuable cultural tips.
In Filipino, Christmas is called...
[slowly] Pasko
This is the happiest and most colorful season in the Philippines.
Mass is observed over nine days, ending with large shared meals on Christmas day. Christmas is also the longest celebration in the Philippines, starting as early as September 1st and continuing until January the following year.
On Pasko, or "Christmas Day," Filipino people greet each other by saying Maligayang Pasko!
(slow) Maligayang Pasko!
It means "Merry Christmas!"
When you meet someone on Christmas day, be sure to greet them with this phrase.
Filipino people celebrate the holiday with their own special events and customs. The most popular food to eat on Christmas is...
(slow) lechon
It means "a pork dish."
Roasted pig is a favorite main dish on Christmas Eve, known as "lechon" locally. This is accompanied by dishes such as ham, fruit salad, rice cakes, and sweets. Filipinos also love eating Keso de Bola, or Edam cheese, on Christmas day.
Let's wrap up this lesson by recapping what you've learned. Listen to the words and repeat after me.
