Becky: Expressions Describing Apathy
Becky: Hi everyone, and welcome back to FilipinoPod101.com. I'm Becky.
Jay: And I'm Jay!
Becky: This is Must-Know Filipino Slang Words and Phrases, Season 1, Lesson 16. In this lesson you'll learn expressions describing apathy. When you're apathetic about the situation, these slang terms will express that apathy.
SLANG EXPRESSIONS
Becky: The expressions you'll be learning in this lesson are:
Jay: sabog
Jay: bangag
Jay: basag
Jay: dedma
Becky: Jay, what's our first expression?
Jay: sabog
Becky: literally meaning "blast." But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "wasted."
Jay: [SLOW] sabog [NORMAL] sabog
Becky: Listeners, please repeat.
Jay: sabog

Becky: Use this slang expression to describe someone who is drunk, appears drunk, or is just not their normal self. This can also be used to refer to oneself.
Becky : Now let's hear an example sentence.
Jay: [NORMAL] Sabog-sabog yun presentation namin kanina sa klase. Hindi kasi kami nakapaghanda nang maayos. [SLOW] Sabog-sabog yun presentation namin kanina sa klase. Hindi kasi kami nakapaghanda nang maayos.
Becky: "Our presentation a while ago in class was wasted. We weren't able to prepare properly that's why."
Jay: [NORMAL] Sabog-sabog yun presentation namin kanina sa klase. Hindi kasi kami nakapaghanda nang maayos.
Becky: Okay, what's the next expression?
Jay: bangag
Becky: When it's used as a slang expression, it means "out of one's mind."
Jay: [SLOW] bangag [NORMAL] bangag
Becky: Listeners, please repeat.
Jay: bangag

Becky: Use this slang expression when you describe someone who seems to be spacing out, not focused about a topic, or someone who is not him or herself at a particular moment. It’s also normal to describe oneself when you're too exhausted. Now let's hear an example sentence.
Jay: [NORMAL] Bangag na ako. Isang oras lang ang tulog ko kagabi dahil tinapos ko ang report. [SLOW] Bangag na ako. Isang oras lang ang tulog ko kagabi dahil tinapos ko ang report.
Becky: "I am spacing out. I only slept for one hour since I finished my report last night."
Jay: [NORMAL] Bangag na ako. Isang oras lang ang tulog ko kagabi dahil tinapos ko ang report.
Becky: Okay, what's our next expression?
Jay: basag
Becky: literally meaning "crack." But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "be stunned, baffled."
Jay: [SLOW] basag [NORMAL] basag
Becky: Listeners, please repeat.
Jay: basag

Becky: Use this slang expression to refer to someone being dumbfounded after their statements are rebutted by a more convincing argument. The statements can be serious topics or jokes. Be careful when you use this word. This is offensive if good relationships have not been established yet.
Becky : Now let's hear an example sentence.
Jay: [NORMAL] Basag ka kay Alex. Dapat kasi hindi ka nakikidebate sa kanya, e champion yan sa debate. [SLOW] Basag ka kay Alex. Dapat kasi hindi ka nakikidebate sa kanya, e champion yan sa debate.
Becky: "You've been dumbfounded by Alex. You should not have debated with him, he is a champion of debate you know."
Jay: [NORMAL] Basag ka kay Alex. Dapat kasi hindi ka nakikidebate sa kanya, e champion yan sa debate.
Becky: Okay, what's the last expression?
Jay: dedma
Becky: It’s an abbreviation for
Jay: dead malice
Becky: meaning "numb to injury." But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "to ignore, pretend someone/something is not there."
Jay: [SLOW] dedma [NORMAL] dedma
Becky: Listeners, please repeat.
Jay: dedma

Becky: Use this slang expression to describe someone who completely ignores someone or something. To snub, reject, or pretend deafness or blindness in order to escape a sticky situation. Now let's hear an example sentence.
Jay: [NORMAL] Pinagsabihan ko na siya ilang beses, lagi lang naman dedma sa akin yun. Hindi ako pinapakinggan. [SLOW] Pinagsabihan ko na siya ilang beses, lagi lang naman dedma sa akin yun. Hindi ako pinapakinggan.
Becky: "I have warned him many times and he just always ignores me. He doesn't listen to me."
Jay: [NORMAL] Pinagsabihan ko na siya ilang beses, lagi lang naman dedma sa akin yun. Hindi ako pinapakinggan.

Becky: Her reply doesn’t fit with your question. She doesn’t seem to speak with logic and her thinking seems distant. You can ask if she’s in this condition:

Becky: You drank too much alcohol. You ask your friend to go home because you said you are:

Becky: He was telling you a riddle for fun but one of your friends answered immediately halfway through the riddle, you say to the one giving the riddle:

Becky: "be stunned, baffled"
