John: Welcome to 3-Minute Filipino Season 1, Lesson 14 - When Are You Leaving? In this lesson, you'll learn how to ask when someone is leaving in Filipino.

John: Here's the informal way to ask "When are you leaving?" in Filipino.
Camille: [Normal] Kelan ka aalis?
John: First is a word meaning "when."
Camille: [Normal] kelan [Slow] kelan
John: Next is the word meaning "you."
Camille: [Normal] ka [Slow] ka
John: Last is the word meaning "leave."
Camille: [Normal] aalis [Slow] aalis
John: Note the rising intonation. Listen again to the informal question meaning "When are you leaving?"

John: Now, imagine you're speaking to someone you don’t know well. Here's the formal way to ask, "When are you leaving?"

Camille: In the Philippines, it's totally fine to prod the other person for details. How long will they be gone? Who are they going with? Why are they going there? If you are the one being asked, and you don't want to reply, just smile and say sikreto! which means "secret!"
