Filipino Survival Phrases Lesson 28 - Asking directions in Filipino.
In today's lesson, we will introduce you with directions that will help you find the place that you are looking for. Previously, we introduced "Is there a (something) near here?" and "Where is the/a (something)?" But while we can now ask, we haven't addressed understanding the answer. Today, we're going to work on understanding what is said. So, today, we’ll go over basic directions.
First, we have "Go straight." In Filipino, "Go straight" is Diretso lang.
Diretso lang.
Let’s break it down by syllable: Diretso lang.
Now, let’s hear it once again: Diretso lang.
The first word Diretso means "straight."
Let’s break down this word and hear it one more time: Diretso.
And, Diretso.
This is followed by Lang, which in English is "only."
Lang.
Lang.
And, Lang.
So, to recap here, we have Diretso lang, which means "Go straight."
Now, we're going to work on turning. Let's try "Turn right." In Filipino, "Turn right" is Kanan ka.
Kanan ka.
The first word Kanan means "right."
Let's break down this word and hear it one more time: Kanan.
Kanan.
And, Kanan.
This is followed by Ka, which in Filipino is "you."
Ka.
And, Ka.
Now, "Turn left." In Filipino, "Turn left" is Kaliwa ka.

The first word Kaliwa means "left."
Let's break down this word and hear it one more time: Kaliwa.
And, Kaliwa.
This is followed by Ka, which in Filipino is "you."

In Filipino, "It's on the right" is Nasa kanan.

You might have noticed that when saying "Turn left," the word for "turn" has not been included literally. "Turn to your left" in Filipino is Liko ka sa kaliwa. And, "Turn to your right" is Liko ka sa Kanan. But when giving and receiving directions, Liko is usually dropped. The casual way would be to say Kaliwa ka for turning left, and Kanan ka for turning right.
