INTRODUCTION
Becky: Expressions to Describe the Appeal of a Person
Becky: Hi everyone, and welcome back to FilipinoPod101.com. I'm Becky.
Jay: And I'm Jay!
Becky: This is Must-Know Filipino Slang Words and Phrases, Season 1, Lesson 6. In this lesson you'll learn expressions to describe the appeal of a person.
Becky: You meet several types of people every day, and these are the ways to describe them. Just be careful, because some of these are offensive when improperly used.
SLANG EXPRESSIONS
Becky: The expressions you'll be learning in this lesson are:
Jay: pabebe
Jay: bagets
Jay: chiks
Jay: abnoy
Becky: Jay, what's our first expression?
Jay: pabebe
Becky: It’s an abbreviation of
Jay: pa baby
Becky: meaning "acting like a baby." But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "acting cute."
Jay: [SLOW] pabebe [NORMAL] pabebe
Becky: Listeners, please repeat.
Jay: pabebe
[pause - 5 sec.]
Becky: Use this slang expression to describe someone who thinks they’re acting cute, but in actuality it's rather irritating or off-putting. Before, it was exclusively used for those who were trying to talk like a baby or who did anything to try and make themselves seem cute. However, a recent trend in Philippine pop culture, called
Jay: the "pabebe wave,"
Becky: was made popular by a famous comedian who has a positive image, but who is known for acting cute. Since then, this term doesn't necessarily connote a negative meaning.
Becky : Now let's hear an example sentence.
Jay: [NORMAL] Wag ka ngang pabebe! Nakita mo lang crush mo, pabebe ka na, hahaha! [SLOW] Wag ka ngang pabebe! Nakita mo lang crush mo, pabebe ka na, hahaha!
Becky: "Please don't try to act cute! Just because you saw your crush, you are now acting cute, hahaha!"
Jay: [NORMAL] Wag ka ngang pabebe! Nakita mo lang crush mo, pabebe ka na, hahaha!
Becky: Okay, what's the next expression?
Jay: bagets
Becky: When it's used as a slang expression, it means "youth."
Jay: [SLOW] bagets [NORMAL] bagets
Becky: Listeners, please repeat.
Jay: bagets
[pause - 5 sec.]
Becky: Use this slang expression when you describe someone young (or who seems young) or someone inexperienced in life. The term was derived from
Jay: bagito
Becky: which means “new or inexperienced.” Although most people know this term, it's one of the older slang expressions so older people use this more often than younger generations. Let's hear an example sentence.
Jay: [NORMAL] Bagets na bagets ka pa rin a! Talaga bang may apo ka na? [SLOW] Bagets na bagets ka pa rin a! Talaga bang may apo ka na?
Becky: "You still look very young! Are you sure you really have a grandchild?"
Jay: [NORMAL] Bagets na bagets ka pa rin a! Talaga bang may apo ka na?
Becky: Okay, what's our next expression?
Jay: chiks
Becky: literally meaning "chic." When it's used as a slang expression, it means "elegant, pretty, sexy (when referring to a woman)."
Jay: [SLOW] chiks [NORMAL] chiks
Becky: Listeners, please repeat.
Jay: chiks
[pause - 5 sec.]
Becky: Use this slang expression when you see someone elegant and stylish. The Philippines is a relatively conservative society, so some people may find it offensive. Also, a good number of people don’t know this was derived from the term "chic." Some believe it came from something else, like the cock fighting culture in the Philippines, causing it to be offensive.
Jay: Be careful when you use this word as it refers to females only.
Becky: Also, this term can sound negative to female listeners and some male listeners. Now let's hear an example sentence.
Jay: [NORMAL] Wag mong isipin lahat ng chiks, pera lang ang habol. Marami sa kanila naghahanap din ng matinong lalaki. [SLOW] Wag mong isipin lahat ng chiks, pera lang ang habol. Marami sa kanila naghahanap din ng matinong lalaki.
Becky: "Do not assume that all elegant, pretty ladies are just after money. A lot of them are looking for sensible men."
Jay: [NORMAL] Wag mong isipin lahat ng chiks, pera lang ang habol. Marami sa kanila naghahanap din ng matinong lalaki.
Becky: Okay, what's the last expression?
Jay: abnoy
Becky: It’s an abbreviation for
Jay: abnormal
Becky: meaning "abnormal." But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "crazy."
Jay: [SLOW] abnoy [NORMAL] abnoy
Becky: Listeners, please repeat.
Jay: abnoy
[pause - 5 sec.]
Becky: Use this slang expression when describing someone who can be a bit eccentric or has a crazy way of thinking. This expression is used for someone who has crazy ideas, but not literally someone who has a mental disability. It’s not politically correct to refer to someone who is mentally disabled with this term.
Jay: Also, unless the context is a joke or humorous, this is offensive.
Becky : Now let's hear an example sentence.
Jay: [NORMAL] Abnoy ka talaga! Bakit isang pares lang ng medyas ang kinuha mo, paano mo susuotin yan! Haha! [SLOW] Abnoy ka talaga! Bakit isang pares lang ng medyas ang kinuha mo, paano mo susuotin yan! Haha!
Becky: "You really are crazy! Why did you take only one side of the pair of socks? How do you expect to wear that!? Haha!"
Jay: [NORMAL] Abnoy ka talaga! Bakit isang pares lang ng medyas ang kinuha mo, paano mo susuotin yan! Haha!
QUIZ
Becky: Okay listeners, are you ready to be quizzed on the expressions you just learned? I’ll describe four situations, and you’ll choose the right expression to use in your reply. Are you ready?
Becky: In his 50’s but still young-looking.
Jay: bagets
Becky: "youth"
Becky: Twinkling eyes in front of a crowd.
Jay: pabebe
Becky: "acting cute"
Becky: Drinking soup with the use of a straw to act funny.
Jay: abnoy
Becky: "crazy"
Becky: Together with male friends, you saw a beauty contest happening at the park. The ladies are?
Jay: chiks
Becky: "elegant, pretty, sexy (when referring to a woman)"
