INTRODUCTION
Becky: Expressions Used in Arguments and Competitions
Becky: Hi everyone, and welcome back to FilipinoPod101.com. I'm Becky.
Jay: And I'm Jay!
Becky: This is Must-Know Filipino Slang Words and Phrases, Season 1, Lesson 19. In this lesson you'll learn expressions used in arguments and competitions.
Becky: In sports, games, competitions, or arguments, these slang terms describe who is winning, and who's bringing their A-game.
SLANG EXPRESSIONS
Becky: The expressions you'll be learning in this lesson are:
Jay: kinakain nang buhay
Jay: boom panes
Jay: chugi
Jay: beastmode
Becky: Jay, what's our first expression?
Jay: kinakain nang buhay
Becky: literally meaning "being eaten alive." But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "being significantly outmatched, to be no match."
Jay: [SLOW] kinakain nang buhay [NORMAL] kinakain nang buhay
Becky: Listeners, please repeat.
Jay: kinakain nang buhay
[pause - 5 sec.]
Becky: Use this slang expression to describe a game, usually in sports, where there is a clear disadvantage between the two competitors. In the past, it’s also used to describe a situation where one is completely ignorant about something. However, nowadays, this is almost used solely for sports or competitions.
Becky : Now let's hear an example sentence.
Jay: [NORMAL] Kinakain nang buhay ng Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavs. Di kaya ng Cavs 'to, talo na sa series na 'to. [SLOW] Kinakain nang buhay ng Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavs. Di kaya ng Cavs 'to, talo na sa series na 'to.
Becky: "The Golden State Warriors have significantly outmatched the Cleveland Cavs. The Cavs can't match at all, they will surely lose this series."
Jay: [NORMAL] Kinakain nang buhay ng Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavs. Di kaya ng Cavs 'to, talo na sa series na 'to.
Becky: Okay, what's the next expression?
Jay: boom panes
Becky: It’s a combination of two words:
Jay: boom is the sound of explosion. Panes means “spoiled.”
Becky: As in food that has gone bad. But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "owned! / booyah!"
Jay: [SLOW] boom panes [NORMAL] boom panes
Becky: Listeners, please repeat.
Jay: boom panes
[pause - 5 sec.]
Becky: Use this slang expression when someone has been owned or lost in an argument, usually just small arguments that lasts around 2-3 minutes. It’s shouted by either the winner of the argument or the crowd who just felt like shouting it to support a person's debate. It’s used in a similar context to "take that!" or "beat that!" in a mocking manner. Be careful when you use this word, saying this to an unfamiliar person is offensive
Becky : Now let's hear an example sentence.
Jay: [NORMAL] Wala ka palang sinabi e, boom panes ka! Ang yabang mo kasi, yan tuloy napahiya ka. [SLOW] Wala ka palang sinabi e, boom panes ka! Ang yabang mo kasi, yan tuloy napahiya ka.
Becky: "You are nothing after all, you got owned! You are so arrogant. See, you got embarrassed."
Jay: [NORMAL] Wala ka palang sinabi e, boom panes ka! Ang yabang mo kasi, yan tuloy napahiya ka.
Becky: Okay, what's our next expression?
Jay: chugi
Becky: When it's used as a slang expression, it means "dead," or "in trouble."
Jay: [SLOW] chugi [NORMAL] chugi
Becky: Listeners, please repeat.
Jay: chugi
[pause - 5 sec.]
Becky: Use this slang expression when you refer to a situation of being in deep trouble. It can also mean "dead." It comes from the onomatopoeia
Jay: "chug,"
Becky: which imitates the sound of a knife stabbing someone's body, used commonly in Filipino comics. Now let's hear an example sentence.
Jay: [NORMAL] Patay, chugi ako sa boss ko. May malaki akong pagkakamali sa report na ginawa ko. [SLOW] Patay, chugi ako sa boss ko. May malaki akong pagkakamali sa report na ginawa ko.

Becky: Okay, what's the last expression?
Jay: beastmode
Becky: literally meaning "beast mode." But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "angry / bring one's A-game."
Jay: [SLOW] beastmode [NORMAL] beastmode
Becky: Listeners, please repeat.
Jay: beastmode
[pause - 5 sec.]
Becky: Use this slang expression to describe yourself or someone in a state of anger. Another meaning is that you or someone is about to bring their A-game. Now let's hear an example sentence.
