Hello, and welcome to the Culture Class- Holidays in the Philippines Series at FilipinoPod101.com. In this series, we’re exploring the traditions behind Filipino holidays and observances. I’m Eric, and you're listening to Season 1, Lesson 6, Easter Sunday. In Filipino, it’s called Linggo ng Pagkabuhay.
After one week of sadness, finally, it's time to celebrate! Easter Sunday is a day of great happiness and celebration for Filipinos.
For many Catholics, the reenactment of Virgin Mary's meeting with the risen Jesus is done not only on the evening of Black Saturday, but also on the dawn of Easter Sunday, along with many more traditions and activities that happen on this day.
Let's discover how Filipinos celebrate this day!
Now, before we get into more detail, do you know the answer to this question-
Do you know the name of the festival held on Easter Sunday in the province of Marinduque?
If you don't already know, you’ll find out a bit later. Keep listening.
People living in the city, or in Filipino, siyudad, usually go to church on the morning of Easter Sunday. In the provinces, the first celebrations often start as early as 4 in the morning. During the Salubong celebrated on the evening of Sabado de Gloria, the images of Jesus and Mary are brought together outside the church.
In the provinces, it can be said that the traditional way of celebrating Easter Sunday is still very much alive. Because this is a day of great celebration and the end of fasting, homes across the nation are filled with food and singing. Every family has their own way of celebrating, but most choose to gather for a small feast, for which different kinds of dishes, or putahe, are prepared.
In addition, Easter Egg Hunting and Easter Egg painting contests for children are quite popular past times. These kinds of celebrations just recently became popular in the Philippines, and are hosted by malls and some big companies.
Because many people must return to the city to prepare to go back to work, this is also one of the days when the most heavily congested traffic happens. Airports or paliparan, ports and bus terminals are typically jam-packed during this day. So, if you're in the Philippines on Easter, be sure to leave early if you need to go out!
Now it's time to answer our quiz question-
Do you know the name of the festival held on Easter Sunday in the province of Marinduque?
This is the Moriones Festival. It is a festival, or piyesta, where people dress up and wear Morion masks to imitate Roman soldiers. The life of Saint Longinus, a Roman centurion blind in one eye, is dramatized at this festival.
So listeners, how did you like this lesson? Did you learn anything interesting?
