John: Welcome to 3-Minute Filipino Season 1, Lesson 8 - Talking About Your Age. In this lesson, you'll learn how to ask someone's age and to say yours in Filipino.

John: Here's the informal way to ask "How old are you?" in Filipino.
Camille: [Normal] Ilang taon ka na?
John: First is a word meaning "how many."
Camille: [Normal] Ilang [Slow] Ilang
John: Next is the word meaning "year."
Camille: [Normal] taon [Slow] taon
John: Next is the word meaning "you," singular.
Camille: [Normal] ka [Slow] ka
John: Last is the word meaning "already."
Camille: [Normal] na [Slow] na
John: Note the rising intonation. Listen again to the informal question meaning "How old are you?"
Camille: [Slow] Ilang taon ka na? [Normal] Ilang taon ka na?
John: Now, imagine you're speaking to a stranger. Here's the formal way to ask, "How old are you?"
Camille: [Normal] Ilang taon na po kayo?
John: First is a word meaning "how many."

Camille: As a rule of thumb, it is considered rude to ask women their age. Some indirect ways of figuring out another person's age could be asking where and when they graduated from college or how long they have been working.
