GRAMMAR POINT
Filipino Survival Phrases Lesson 22 - Traveling by bus in the Philippines.
Once on the bus, you'll hear announcements informing the passengers of where the bus will stop next. Now, in the case if there are no English announcement, you may not catch the location just announced. So, the phrase "What is the next stop?" will be indispensable.
In Filipino, "What is the next stop" is Saan ang susunod na hinto?
Saan ang susunod na hinto?
Let's break it down by syllable: Saan ang susunod na hinto?
Now, let's hear it once again: Saan ang susunod na hinto?
The first word Saan means "where."
Let's break down this word and hear it one more time: Saan.
And, Saan.
This is followed by Ang, which in English is "the."
Ang.
Ang.
And, Ang.
This followed by Susunod, which means "next."
Let's break this down by syllable and hear it one more time: Susunod.
And, Susunod.
Then followed by Na, which has no English translation, but it denotes the person or thing mentioned, indicated, or understood.
Let's hear this word again: Na.
And followed by Hinto, in English "stop."
Let's hear this word one more time: Hinto.
And, Hinto.
So, to recap here, we have Saan ang susunod na hinto? Literally, this means "Where is the next stop?"
Another way of inquiring could be asking if your desired destination is the next stop. For this phrase, we'll use "Ortigas" as the destination. So, the phrase "Is Ortigas is the next stop" is Ortigas ba ang susunod na hinto?
Ortigas ba ang susunod na hinto?
Let's break this down by syllable: Ortigas ba ang susunod na hinto?
Now, let's hear it once again: Ortigas ba ang susunod na hinto?
The first word Ba has no English translation but is an emphatic article usually used when asking questions.
Let's hear the word again: Ba.
This is followed by the word Ang, means "the."
Let's hear this word again: Ang.
This is followed by the word Susunod, which means "next."
Let's break down this word and hear it one more time: Susunod.
And, Susunod.
This is followed by Na, which has no English translation, but it denotes the person or thing mentioned indicated or understood.
Let's hear this word again: Na.
And then, followed by Hinto, which in English is "stop."
Hinto.
Hinto.
And, Hinto.
So, to recap here, we have Ortigas ba ang susunod na hinto? which means "Is Ortigas the next stop?"
If you're uncertain about the next stop, you may tell the fare collector where your destination is, so he would know in advance where to drop you. You may raise your one hand to get his attention and just say your desired destination, for instance, Ortigas. All of the buses in the Philippines have a driver and a fare collector. The fare collector is the one that gives out tickets and collects the fare.

Okay, to close out this lesson, we'd like for you to practice what you've just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you're responsible for saying it aloud. You have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so good luck, that also means “good luck” in Filipino. Here we go!
