GRAMMAR POINT
Filipino Survival Phrases Lesson 21 - Riding the bus in the Philippines.
The bus is an important means of transportation. However, before you get on the bus, you probably want to confirm if the bus is going to your destination. We can accomplish this by asking, "Will this bus go to…?" and then, add in a destination. In today's lesson, we'll use Cubao station. In Filipino, "station" is Estasyon.
Let's break it down by syllable: Estasyon.
Now, let's hear it once again: Estasyon
So, our location is Estasyon ng Cubao.
So, in Filipino, "Will this bus go to Cubao station?" is Pupunta ba ito sa estasyon ng Cubao?
Pupunta ba ito sa estasyon ng Cubao?
Let's break it down by syllable: Pupunta ba ito sa estasyon ng Cubao?
Now, let's hear it once again: Pupunta ba ito sa estasyon ng Cubao?
The first word Pupunta means "go to."
Let's break down this word and hear it one more time: Pupunta.
Pupunta.
And, Pupunta.
This is followed by Ba, which don't have an English translation.
Ba.
And, Ba.
Followed by Ito, which means "this."
Let's break it down and hear it one more time: Ito.
And, Ito.
And then, followed by Sa, which in English is "to."
Let's hear it one more time: Sa.
So, to recap here, we have Pupunta ba ito sa estasyon ng Cubao?
Once you have the right bus, there are a few things you need to know about riding the bus.
Number one: When do you pay? It depends on the route. There are bus routes that you have to pay when it's time for the collector to collect your fare. And there are also bus routes that you can pay at any time during the trip because there is always a collector who constantly collects the fare inside the bus while on the trip.
Two: How much is it? It depends on the distance or your destination, but you can always ask the collector how much you have to pay. Just say, Magkano papunta sa Cubao?
Do you need coins? You may need coins, but you may either pay coins or bills.
How much? In average, for short distance, it's 10 pesos.
In instances where you have to if the bus is going to stop by your destination, let's say your destination is the National Park, "Is this going to stop by the National Park?" In Filipino is Dadaan ba ito sa National Park?
Let's break down this phrase and hear it one more time: Dadaan ba ito sa National Park?
Dadaan ba ito sa National Park?

Outro

Okay, to close out this lesson, we'd like for you to practice what you've just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you're responsible for saying it aloud. You have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so good luck, that also means “good luck” in Filipino. Here we go!
